, 🌲 Skills Needed – Arborist Roles
Certified Arborist
(Usually ISA Certified or equivalent)
• Deep knowledge of tree biology, identification, and pruning techniques
• Tree risk assessment and diagnosis of diseases/pests
• Safe use of climbing gear, chainsaws, and rigging equipment
• Knowledge of soil science, tree nutrition, and fertilization methods
• Familiarity with ANSI A300 standards and best practices
• Strong customer communication and report writing skills
• Ability to supervise crews and mentor less experienced staff
Non-Certified Arborist
(Entry-level or working toward certification)
• Basic tree and plant identification skills
• Willingness to learn proper pruning and removal techniques
• Comfort working with hand and power tools
• Physical fitness and stamina
• Awareness of basic safety practices (PPE, ladder use, etc.)
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
• Interest in pursuing professional development and certifications
Climbing Arborist
(Hands-on, field-intensive role – certified or not)
• Proficient in tree climbing using ropes and harnesses (DDRT/SRT)
• Skilled in rigging and aerial rescue techniques
• Strong understanding of tree structure and biomechanics
• Ability to assess limb weight and safe drop zones
• Chainsaw use and maintenance (in-tree and on-ground)
• High level of physical strength, balance, and endurance
• Focused on safety and hazard recognition at height
• Team coordination during removals or technical pruning
